Custom Hearing Protection

If you're seeking solutions to protect your hearing from loud noise exposure or enhance your hearing aid experience, custom molded earplugs and earmolds are an excellent choice. A single exposure to a loud sound can cause permanent damage to your hearing, and many everyday noises are much louder than what our ears can handle comfortably. With over 15% of Americans experiencing irreversible noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), it's clear that we need more education on how to protect our hearing regularly, as well as how to optimize the use of hearing aids with custom earmolds.

At Haynie Audiology in Freehold, NJ, custom earplugs for hearing protection are reusable and equipped with different noise filters to reduce damaging levels of sound to a safe level, without affecting your ability to understand speech or appreciate music. Sounds from lawn mowers and gunshots to blow dryers, garbage trucks, and more can all measure well beyond 85 decibels, the threshold at which our ears can comfortably process sounds.

Whether you’re in law enforcement, often around industrial equipment, or enjoy recreational hunting or swimming, custom earplugs and earmolds can make a significant difference in your ability to hear for years to come.

Unlike standard over-the-counter earplugs, custom devices are made from precise impressions of your ears, allowing for a secure fit. Additional features such as speech filters and in-ear-monitors can be added based on your individual needs.

Musicians and Performers

Musicians face a unique hearing protection challenge — standard earplugs reduce sound unevenly, muffling high frequencies and distorting the music they need to hear clearly. Custom musician earplugs use specialized acoustic filters that attenuate all frequencies evenly, preserving the natural balance and quality of sound while reducing overall volume to a safe level. This allows musicians to hear themselves and their fellow performers clearly without risking the cumulative noise-induced hearing loss that affects a significant percentage of professional and recreational musicians.

Custom in-ear monitors — fitted from precise ear impressions — provide an additional option for performers who need both hearing protection and audio monitoring during rehearsals and live performances. Dr. Haynie can take ear impressions for both custom earplugs and in-ear monitors at our Freehold office.

Swimmers and Water Sports

Water entering the ear canal can lead to swimmer's ear (otitis externa), a painful infection caused by trapped moisture. For frequent swimmers, surfers, or water sports enthusiasts, custom swim plugs provide a watertight seal that generic foam earplugs and over-the-counter options rarely achieve.

Custom swim plugs are made from a floatable, waterproof material and are molded precisely to your ear canal, making them comfortable for extended wear and significantly more effective than standard options. They are also recommended for patients who have ear tubes, perforated eardrums, or a history of chronic ear infections.

Hunters and Shooting Sports

Firearm noise is among the most damaging sounds the ear can experience — a single gunshot can reach 140-165 decibels, well above the threshold for immediate and permanent hearing damage. Standard foam earplugs reduce all sound indiscriminately, making it difficult to hear range commands, conversation, or environmental awareness cues.

Custom hunting and shooting earplugs are available with electronic or passive filters that suppress harmful impulse noise from gunshots while allowing normal-level sounds like speech and ambient environment to pass through naturally. This provides both safe noise protection and the situational awareness that hunters and sport shooters require.

Occupational and Industrial Workers

Workers in loud environments — construction, manufacturing, landscaping, transportation, public safety, and others — face daily noise exposure that accumulates over a career. OSHA requires hearing protection in environments that reach 85 decibels or above for sustained periods, yet compliance is often poor because generic foam earplugs are uncomfortable and inconsistently worn.

Custom occupational earplugs fit securely, comfortably, and are available with a range of attenuation levels appropriate for different noise environments. Because they are made from precise impressions of your ear canal, they stay in place during physical activity and are far more likely to be worn consistently

Hearing Aid Users and Custom Earmolds

Hearing aid users benefit significantly from custom earmolds — precision-fit components that connect hearing aids to the ear canal and improve both sound quality and device stability. Unlike standard domes or tips that come with many hearing aids, custom earmolds are made from impressions of your specific ear anatomy, providing a more secure fit, better low-frequency sound delivery, and reduced feedback.

Custom earmolds are particularly beneficial for patients with severe hearing loss who require maximum power from their devices, patients who are physically active and need devices that stay in place, and those who find standard tips uncomfortable for extended wear.

The Ear Impression Process

Custom earplugs and earmolds begin with an ear impression — a quick, comfortable in-office procedure that takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Dr. Haynie first examines both ear canals to confirm they are clear and healthy. A small cotton or foam dam is gently placed near the eardrum for protection, and a soft impression material is carefully injected into the ear canal and allowed to set for a few minutes. Once set, the impressions are removed and sent to the manufacturer, where your custom devices are fabricated to the precise contours of your ear.

Most custom devices are ready within two to three weeks.
