Most performance claims in hearing aids come from the manufacturer. The claim that defines the Phonak Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere came from somewhere else.

HearAdvisor — the independent audiological testing laboratory that measures prescription hearing aids against standardized conditions without manufacturer involvement — ranked the Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere number one for speech in noise among all prescription hearing aids tested. Its speech-in-noise score measured 2.88 points above the category average — not a narrow margin but a substantial lead that reflects a genuinely different level of performance in the listening environments where hearing aids are hardest to use.

That independent verification is the starting point for understanding what the Phonak Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere actually is — and why, even with the newer Phonak EON Sphere now available, it remains one of the most clinically significant hearing aids on the market.

The Two-Chip Architecture — Why the Sphere Is Different

Every hearing aid uses a processing chip. What makes the Sphere tier different from the rest of the hearing aid market — and from the rest of the Phonak lineup — is that it uses two chips, and the second one does something no shared-processing chip can do well.

The ERA chip handles everything a modern hearing aid needs to do — AutoSense OS automatic environment classification, Bluetooth streaming, Roger integration, noise reduction, and standard amplification. It is a capable, current-generation processor on its own.

The DEEPSONIC chip has one job: separating the voice you want to hear from the competing noise around you in real time. Nothing else. Phonak reports DEEPSONIC performs 7.7 billion operations per second with 53 times more processing power than previous generation hearing aid chips — a computational capacity dedicated entirely to the single hardest problem in hearing aid engineering: speech in noise.

This architectural separation — one chip for everything else, one chip dedicated entirely to speech-in-noise — is what produced the HearAdvisor number one ranking. Most hearing aid platforms run their AI through a shared chip that must balance speech separation against every other processing demand. The DEEPSONIC chip faces no such trade-off.

Spheric Speech Clarity — What It Actually Does

Spheric Speech Clarity is the feature the DEEPSONIC chip runs — and understanding what it does helps patients evaluate whether it addresses their specific listening challenge.

Standard noise reduction works by identifying and reducing background sound broadly — suppressing the room so speech is relatively louder. This approach struggles when the noise is primarily other voices, because the system cannot reliably distinguish the voice of interest from the competing voices around it.

Spheric Speech Clarity works differently. The DEEPSONIC chip's deep neural network is trained to identify the specific acoustic characteristics of speech as distinct from other speech — not just speech versus noise, but the voice you are actively listening to versus the other voices in the environment. It enhances that voice and reduces the competing ones in real time, continuously, without suppressing the room to the point of sounding unnatural.

The SNR benefit from Spheric Speech Clarity is reported at up to 10.2 dB — a clinically meaningful improvement that translates directly into more words understood per sentence in the most demanding listening environments. Restaurants, parties, group meetings, family gatherings — these are the situations where the DEEPSONIC chip's dedicated processing produces results that the ERA chip alone cannot match.

The Ultra Update — What Changed in October 2025

The Infinio Ultra Sphere is the same hardware as the original Audéo Sphere Infinio that launched in August 2024 — with an important distinction. In October 2025, Phonak released the Ultra firmware update after accumulating approximately one year of data from over one million real-world fittings. The update made three meaningful improvements:

Battery life in Sphere mode improved by approximately 43%. The original Sphere's most significant practical limitation was battery life when running active DEEPSONIC processing — approximately 7 hours per charge. The Ultra update extended this to approximately 10 to 11 hours. The rated battery life in quiet environments extended to 56 hours.

AutoSense OS upgraded to version 7.0. Retrained on 18 times more real-world scenarios than the previous version — improving the accuracy and speed of automatic environment classification.

Speech clarity in noise improved further. With improved DNN processing from a year of additional real-world data, voices stand out more clearly against background noise while the surrounding environment sounds more natural.

New patients who purchase the Infinio Ultra Sphere today receive this firmware during setup. Existing owners of the original Sphere Infinio can receive the update free through their hearing care provider.

The HearAdvisor Results — In Full

For patients who want the independent laboratory numbers, here is what HearAdvisor found in its audiologist-optimized tuned condition:

Overall SoundScore: 5.0 out of 5 — A Grade — Expert Choice Award. Top 3% of all prescription hearing aids tested.

Speech in noise: 4.6 out of 5. Ranked number one among all prescription hearing aids tested. Measured 2.88 points above the category average — the largest margin of any device in the test.

Speech in quiet: 4.8 out of 5. Top tier for understanding speech in low-noise environments.

These results were achieved in a best-practices audiologist-optimized fitting that included real ear measurement verification. The numbers reflect what the Infinio Ultra Sphere can do when fitted correctly — which is the standard applied at every fitting at Haynie Audiology.

AutoSense OS AI 7.0 — Automatic Processing Beneath the Sphere

Beneath the DEEPSONIC chip runs AutoSense OS AI 7.0 — Phonak's automatic environment classification system that scans the acoustic environment hundreds of times per second and automatically blends between more than 200 listening programs without any manual input from the wearer. Every environment — quiet conversation, restaurant, outdoor wind, driving, music, streaming — is detected and responded to automatically and continuously.

AutoSense OS AI 7.0 is the same platform running on the current Infinio Ultra R — the difference on the Sphere is that it works alongside the DEEPSONIC chip, which adds the dedicated speech separation layer on top of AutoSense's standard automatic processing. The Sphere is not simply AutoSense with better noise reduction. It is AutoSense plus a dedicated AI chip whose sole purpose is speech in noise.

Battery Life — The Honest Picture

The Infinio Ultra Sphere's battery life requires honest context because two numbers apply depending on how the device is used.

56 hours is the rated battery life in a quiet environment — the full charge running the ERA chip with minimal DEEPSONIC activity.

10 to 11 hours is the typical battery life when running continuously in active Sphere mode — the DEEPSONIC chip processing speech separation in real time. This is a significant improvement over the original Sphere's 7-hour active mode life, and reflects the 30% efficiency improvement from the Ultra firmware update.

Most patients experience a mixed day — some quiet time, some noisy environments — and land somewhere between these two numbers in practice. For patients whose primary difficult listening situations are time-bounded — the dinner out, the meeting, the social event — 10 to 11 hours of active AI processing covers most daily needs. Patients with longer days should discuss charging logistics at the fitting consultation.

Connectivity — Universal Bluetooth and Auracast

The Infinio Ultra Sphere maintains Phonak's universal Bluetooth advantage — direct streaming from any iOS or Android device without platform restrictions. Phone calls, music, podcasts, and television audio stream directly to both ears. Auracast broadcast audio is supported, allowing wearers to receive direct audio from compatible public venues. RogerDirect is built in, providing native Roger remote microphone compatibility without any accessories.

The Infinio Ultra Sphere does not include a telecoil. Patients who regularly use hearing loop systems in looped venues should discuss this at the fitting consultation.

Infinio Ultra Sphere vs. EON Sphere — Which Is Right for You?

With the EON Sphere now available, patients evaluating the Sphere platform have a choice between two generations. Here is an honest comparison.

The EON Sphere is the newer device — launched August 2026. It runs the HYPERSONIC chip (successor to DEEPSONIC), is 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the Infinio Ultra Sphere, features Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0, AutoSense OS AI 8.0, and WindBlock 2.0. It has not yet been independently tested by HearAdvisor.

The Infinio Ultra Sphere has the independently verified HearAdvisor #1 ranking for speech in noise with a 5.0 SoundScore. It is the device with the proven performance track record. It is slightly larger than the EON Sphere.

For patients who prioritize independently verified performance, the Infinio Ultra Sphere has the track record. For patients who want the newest platform and smallest Sphere body, the EON Sphere is the current choice. Both are available at Haynie Audiology and both are worth discussing at a consultation.
