Welcome to the Saturday Brand Spotlight — a weekly series where we go behind the technology of the hearing aid brands we carry at Haynie Audiology & Hearing Associates. This week: Starkey's flagship Omega AI and the G3 DNN Neuro Processor that powers it.
What is the Starkey Omega AI?
Launched in October 2025, the Omega AI is Starkey's fifth generation of AI-powered hearing aids and their most advanced platform to date. It replaces the Edge AI line and introduces a fundamentally new approach to sound processing — one built around a custom-designed chip called the G3 Gen AI Neuro Processor.
Starkey has been the pace-setter for AI in hearing aids since introducing the Livio AI, followed by Evolv AI, Genesis AI, Edge AI, and now Omega AI. Each generation has brought measurable, clinical improvements — not just marketing language. The Omega AI is the most significant leap yet.
The G3 Gen AI Neuro Processor — what makes it different
The processor at the heart of the Omega AI is Starkey's G3 Gen AI Neuro Processor — the successor to the G2 chip that powered the Edge AI line. The G3 introduces several meaningful advances over previous generations.
It runs a dual deep-neural-network (DNN) engine — processing two streams of neural network analysis simultaneously. Previous generations including the Edge AI ran a single-network architecture. Running two networks in parallel allows the G3 to analyze both speech clarity and spatial sound cues at the same time, rather than prioritizing one at the expense of the other.
The processor is also more computationally powerful than any previous Starkey chip, with significantly more processing memory and non-volatile storage — enabling more sophisticated real-time calculations without sacrificing battery efficiency.
DNN 360 — the world's first neural network directional hearing system
The most significant capability enabled by the G3 processor is DNN 360 — the world's first deep neural network-powered directional hearing system built into a hearing aid.
Traditional directional microphone systems focus amplification on sounds coming from in front of the wearer. They work by comparing signal timing between two microphones and suppressing sounds from the sides and behind. This approach helps in simple face-to-face conversations but struggles in complex, multi-directional listening environments like restaurants, group conversations, or outdoor settings where speech arrives from multiple directions simultaneously.
DNN 360 works fundamentally differently. Rather than mechanically steering a microphone beam, the G3 processor uses its dual neural network to analyze the entire acoustic environment simultaneously — processing sounds coming from every direction at once. It classifies which sounds are speech, identifies where speakers are positioned relative to the wearer, and dynamically adjusts amplification in real time based on what the brain would naturally want to prioritize.
The result is impressive by any clinical measure. Independent testing showed the Omega AI delivers up to 28% better speech intelligibility in difficult listening environments compared to earlier Starkey generations, and up to 8 dB improvement in speech-in-noise performance. In HearAdvisor lab testing, the Omega AI earned a 4.6 out of 5 Tuned SoundScore — placing it in the top 15% of all hearing aids tested to date and earning a 2025 Expert Choice Award.
Who is Starkey Omega AI best suited for?
The Omega AI is Starkey's premium flagship and is best suited for patients who spend significant time in complex, multi-directional listening environments — restaurants, group gatherings, social events, and active workplaces where speech arrives from multiple directions at once. It is particularly well matched for patients who have previously struggled with hearing aids in noisy environments despite adequate amplification, and for those upgrading from previous Starkey generations who want the most significant performance improvement the brand has produced.
For patients whose primary listening challenges are one-on-one conversations in quiet environments, or who prefer simplicity over advanced feature sets, the Edge AI or Genesis AI remain strong options at typically lower price points.
