Phonak Virto R Infinio — Freehold, NJ
The Same Phonak Processing — Invisible, Rechargeable, and Custom-Fit to You
Comfort. Custom fit. Connectivity

For patients who have known for years that their hearing has changed but have been avoiding hearing aids because of how they look, the Phonak Virto R Infinio represents something genuinely new: a device that sits entirely inside the ear canal, is custom-molded to your exact ear anatomy, is rechargeable, connects wirelessly to any Bluetooth device, and runs the same ERA chip and AutoSense OS AI 7.0 platform that powers Phonak's flagship behind-the-ear lineup.
Until August 2025, a patient who wanted a fully featured, connected, rechargeable hearing aid had to choose a device with some part sitting behind the ear. That trade-off no longer exists. The Virto R Infinio is the first rechargeable custom in-the-ear hearing aid Phonak has ever built — and it is the device that removes the visibility barrier for patients who have been waiting for exactly this combination.
A New Category for Phonak — Rechargeable Custom In-the-Ear
Custom in-the-ear hearing aids have been available for decades. What they have historically lacked is the feature set that makes modern hearing aids genuinely useful — rechargeability, Bluetooth streaming, automatic environment detection, app control. The smallest and most discreet hearing aids were consistently the least connected and least capable.
The Virto R Infinio breaks that pattern. It compresses the full Infinio platform technology into a custom-molded in-the-ear device — the ERA chip, AutoSense OS AI 7.0, SmartSpeech Technology, StereoZoom 2.0, RogerDirect, and universal Bluetooth connectivity — in a device that is custom-made from an impression of your ear canal, fits entirely inside the ear, and charges magnetically overnight like wireless earphones.
For patients who have been using this as a reason to delay: the excuse is gone.
ERA Chip and AutoSense OS AI 7.0 — Full Infinio Processing
The Virto R Infinio runs on Phonak's ERA chip — the same processing engine that powers the Audéo Infinio Ultra R and that sits beneath the DEEPSONIC chip in the Infinio Ultra Sphere. It is Phonak's current generation processor, not a scaled-down version adapted for a smaller form factor.
On top of the ERA chip runs AutoSense OS AI 7.0 — Phonak's automatic environment classification system trained on 18 times more real-world scenarios than the previous generation. AutoSense OS scans the acoustic environment continuously and automatically transitions between more than 200 listening programs without any manual adjustment from the wearer — quiet conversation, restaurant noise, outdoor environments, music, phone calls — all handled automatically, silently, and continuously.
The result for Virto R wearers is the same automatic performance the Infinio Ultra R delivers — in a device that sits entirely inside the ear rather than behind it. The processing platform is not compromised by the form factor. The form factor has been built to accommodate the processing platform.
SmartSpeech Technology — Hearing Better With Less Effort
Running alongside AutoSense OS AI 7.0 is Phonak's SmartSpeech Technology — a suite of processing features designed to reduce the cognitive effort of listening rather than simply amplifying sound.
SmartSpeech includes Speech Enhancer, which improves understanding when speech arrives from a distance or from another room. It includes dynamic noise reduction that adapts to changing environments rather than applying static suppression.
And it includes the Virto R's Music Enjoyment feature — AutoSense OS AI 7.0 can accurately identify different music genres and apply appropriate processing for each, a meaningful quality of life feature for patients who listen to music regularly and have found previous hearing aids made music sound artificial.
StereoZoom 2.0 — Directional Processing in a Custom Shell
One of the practical engineering challenges of custom in-the-ear hearing aids is directional microphone performance. Behind-the-ear and receiver-in-canal devices can place their microphones at the top of the ear where the natural acoustic advantage of the ear's own pinna shape is greatest — and the physical distance between two microphones can be maximized for directional processing.
In the Virto R's in-the-ear form factor, the microphone apertures sit at the opening of the ear canal. Phonak's StereoZoom 2.0 adaptive beamforming system maximizes the directional performance available from this position — narrowing the focus of the microphone system toward the sound source of interest in challenging environments and reducing the microphones' sensitivity to competing sounds from the sides and behind. The result is improved speech understanding in noise relative to a non-directional custom device, achieved within the constraints of the in-the-ear form factor.
RightFit Technology and Biometric Calibration
The Virto R Infinio introduces two engineering innovations specific to its custom manufacturing process that improve both the acoustic performance and the fitting accuracy of the finished device.
RightFit technology — Phonak's proprietary custom shell manufacturing process maps the specific geometry of the patient's ear canal to produce a shell that fits precisely, minimizes feedback, and positions the microphone apertures optimally for acoustic performance. A poorly fitting custom shell is one of the most common sources of feedback and discomfort in ITE devices. RightFit addresses this at the manufacturing level rather than through post-fitting adjustments.
Biometric Calibration — Phonak's proprietary process of measuring the specific acoustic characteristics of the individual patient's ear canal — its resonance, its shape, the way it modifies incoming sound — and incorporating those measurements into the directional processing of the device. The Virto R's directionality is calibrated to the patient's specific anatomy, not to a generic ear model. This produces more accurate and comfortable directional processing than standard ITE calibration approaches.
Together, these two processes mean the Virto R is manufactured and calibrated to each patient individually — not manufactured to a standard shell and adjusted afterward.
Snap-and-Charge — Rechargeability Without Compromise
The Virto R Infinio's charging system addresses the practical challenge of recharging a small, smooth device that does not have the retention tabs or hooks of a behind-the-ear unit. The snap-and-charge magnetic system allows the device to be released directly into the charger — it magnetically aligns and attaches to the charging port automatically, with interchangeable magnetic ports so there is no need to identify which device goes to which side.
The result is a charging experience that is as simple as placing wireless earphones in their case — the device charges overnight and is ready for the following day. Battery life on a full charge is up to 30 hours — sufficient for a full waking day of mixed listening and streaming activity.
Universal Bluetooth Connectivity
The Virto R Infinio connects directly to both iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth 5.3 — Phonak's universal connectivity advantage preserved in the custom ITE form factor. Phone calls, music, podcasts, and television audio stream directly to both devices simultaneously. The hearing aids pair with up to eight Bluetooth devices and keep two simultaneously connected.
RogerDirect is built in, providing native compatibility with Phonak's Roger remote microphone system without any adapters or accessories — meaningful for patients who want remote microphone support in demanding listening environments while wearing a discreet custom device.
Tap controls on the device allow wearers to answer calls, adjust volume, or switch programs with a tap on the hearing aid itself — a feature that takes on added significance in a device that has no visible buttons or switches and sits inside the ear.
The myPhonak app provides full control over volume, programs, and settings for patients who prefer smartphone management.
Technology Levels — I90, I70, I50, I30
The Virto R Infinio is available in four technology levels:
I90 — The premium tier. SmartSpeech Technology at maximum strength. The most refined noise reduction, most precise AutoSense transitions, and greatest fine-tuning resolution. For patients in variable and demanding listening environments.
I70 — The advanced tier. Enhanced SmartSpeech performance for improved understanding in noise. For patients with moderate to significant listening challenges.
I50 — The standard tier. AutoSense OS AI 7.0 and core SmartSpeech processing. For patients with moderate listening challenges at a more accessible price point.
I30 — The essential tier. AutoSense OS AI 7.0 with foundational automatic processing. For patients whose listening demands are primarily in quieter, less demanding environments.
All four levels share the ERA chip, AutoSense OS AI 7.0, universal Bluetooth, RogerDirect, StereoZoom 2.0, RightFit manufacturing, Biometric Calibration, and the snap-and-charge magnetic charging system.
Is the Virto R Infinio Right for You?
The Virto R Infinio is most suited for adults with mild to severe hearing loss who want a rechargeable, fully connected hearing aid in a custom in-the-ear form factor that no one else can see. Patients who have been avoiding hearing aids specifically because of how they look. Patients who want universal Bluetooth streaming in a device that requires no part worn behind the ear. Patients who want Phonak's ERA chip processing and AutoSense OS AI 7.0 platform in the most discreet available form factor with full wireless features. Patients whose noise challenges are moderate and who want strong automatic processing without the dedicated Sphere AI chip.
The Virto R Infinio is not the right choice for patients who want the Sphere's dedicated AI chip for speech separation in noise — the Sphere AI is not available in any custom ITE form factor from any manufacturer. Patients who want the absolute minimum size and are willing to sacrifice wireless connectivity — the Virto Titanium IIC is smaller but non-wireless. Patients with severe to profound hearing loss whose audiogram falls outside the Virto R's fitting range. Patients who want same-day fitting — the Virto R requires an ear impression and custom manufacturing, typically taking two to three weeks from impression to fitting appointment.
The Fitting Process — What to Expect
The Virto R Infinio fitting process at Haynie Audiology involves more steps than a behind-the-ear fitting and it is important for patients to understand the timeline before choosing this device:
-
Comprehensive hearing evaluation — complete audiogram confirming the Virto R's fitting range is appropriate for your hearing loss
-
Ear canal examination — confirming the ear canal anatomy accommodates the Virto R's in-the-ear form factor comfortably
-
Ear impression — a quick, comfortable in-office procedure that creates a precise mold of the ear canal sent to Phonak's manufacturing facility
-
Custom manufacturing — typically two to three weeks for the custom shell to be manufactured to the ear impression and RightFit specifications
-
Fitting appointment — the finished device is programmed to your audiogram and verified with real ear measurement at the eardrum, confirming the Virto R is delivering the right amplification for your specific ear canal acoustics
-
Follow-up and orientation — Bluetooth pairing, myPhonak app setup, RogerDirect orientation, and tap control familiarization
The custom manufacturing timeline means patients choosing the Virto R should plan for two to three weeks between the impression appointment and the fitting appointment. This is standard for all custom ITE hearing aids and is not specific to Phonak.
