Phonak Audéo Lumity — Freehold, NJ
Proven Phonak Technology at Its Most Accessible
Conversations Shine With Lumity

Not every patient needs Phonak's newest flagship. Some patients need a hearing aid that has been tested by hundreds of thousands of real-world wearers, that handles every environment automatically, that connects universally to any smartphone, and that delivers the quality engineering Phonak is known for — at a price point that makes hearing care genuinely accessible. And some patients need a feature that every single device in the current Infinio lineup is missing entirely.
The Phonak Audéo Lumity was Phonak's flagship hearing aid when it launched in August 2022. It has been superseded by the Infinio and EON platforms in the years since. What it has built in that time is something newer platforms cannot offer — a deep, field-validated track record in the hands of real patients, across every listening environment, fitting profile, and lifestyle. For the right patient, that proven reliability and accessible pricing make the Lumity a strong and considered clinical choice.

AutoSense OS 5.0 — Proven Automatic Processing
The Lumity runs AutoSense OS 5.0 — Phonak's fifth-generation automatic environment classification system, which scans the acoustic environment continuously and automatically selects and blends between the most appropriate listening programs without any manual input from the wearer.
AutoSense OS 5.0 classifies more listening environments automatically than any previous Phonak platform that preceded it. Quiet conversation, restaurant noise, outdoor environments, driving, music, and phone calls are all detected and managed seamlessly. The transitions between environments are smooth and automatic — no program switching, no button pressing, no app required.
While the current Infinio Ultra R runs AutoSense OS 7.0 — trained on 18 times more real-world data and reported to adapt 24% more precisely than previous generations — AutoSense OS 5.0 is the platform that hundreds of thousands of hearing aid wearers worldwide have used daily across four years of real-world conditions. Its performance in moderate to challenging listening situations is well-established. For patients whose listening environments are primarily moderate rather than extreme, AutoSense OS 5.0 handles them reliably and well.
SmartSpeech Technology — Reduced Listening Effort
The Lumity introduced Phonak's SmartSpeech Technology — a collection of processing features focused on improving speech understanding and reducing the fatigue that comes from effortful listening. SmartSpeech includes dynamic noise reduction, StereoZoom 2.0 adaptive directional processing, and Speech Enhancer for improving understanding of speech arriving from a distance or from an adjacent room.
These features operate across all Lumity technology levels — with the depth and strength of the processing varying by tier. At the L90 premium level, SmartSpeech runs at full strength and delivers the sharpest speech clarity the Lumity platform is capable of in challenging environments. At the L50 and L30 levels, automatic processing handles most everyday situations reliably at a more foundational level of fine-tuning.
Universal Bluetooth — Any Device, No Restrictions
The Lumity runs on Phonak's SWORD chip — the universal Bluetooth processor that allows direct streaming from both iOS and Android devices without any intermediate streaming accessory. This connectivity advantage — Phonak's most consistent differentiator across multiple platform generations — is fully present in the Lumity.
Phone calls, music, podcasts, and television audio stream directly to both hearing aids from any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. Hands-free calling works on compatible iOS and Android devices. The myPhonak app provides volume control, program management, and settings adjustment directly from the smartphone.
RogerDirect is built into the Lumity — providing native compatibility with Phonak's Roger remote microphone system without adapters or accessories. For patients who need remote microphone support in demanding listening environments, Roger works with the Lumity exactly as it does with the current Infinio lineup.
One important note for patients comparing the Lumity to the Infinio Ultra R: the Lumity uses Bluetooth 4.2 rather than the 5.3 used in the Infinio family. Streaming range and connection stability are slightly more limited on the Lumity's Bluetooth implementation, and the Lumity does not support Auracast broadcast audio — the emerging standard that allows streaming from compatible public venues. For patients who want Auracast capability, the Infinio family is the appropriate choice.
The Telecoil Advantage — What Every Infinio Model Is Missing
This is the Lumity's most clinically distinctive feature in the current Phonak lineup — one that is worth understanding clearly before making a device choice.
The Audéo Lumity L-RT is a rechargeable RIC model with a built-in telecoil. A telecoil receives the electromagnetic signal transmitted by hearing loop systems installed in compatible venues — houses of worship, theaters, lecture halls, airports, and other public spaces that are equipped with hearing loop infrastructure. When activated, the telecoil delivers the sound source — the sermon, the performance, the announcement — directly to the hearing aids without any background noise interference, at a volume calibrated to the wearer's hearing loss.
Not a single model in the current Phonak Infinio or EON lineup includes a telecoil. The EON Sphere, Infinio Ultra Sphere, Infinio Ultra R, and Virto R Infinio all lack telecoil capability. For patients who regularly attend a looped house of worship, a looped theater, or any other venue with an installed hearing loop system — and who want Phonak — the Audéo Lumity L-RT is currently the only Phonak RIC that provides telecoil access.
This is not a minor consideration for patients in communities where hearing loop infrastructure is established. It is the deciding factor.
Battery Life and Styles
The Lumity is available in three rechargeable models and one replaceable-battery option:
Audéo L-R — Rechargeable RIC. Up to 24 hours per charge. The standard Lumity model and the most widely fitted version of the platform.
Audéo L-RT — Rechargeable RIC with telecoil. Up to 24 hours per charge. The model recommended for patients who regularly use hearing loop systems. The telecoil adds minimal size to the device.
Audéo L-RL — Rechargeable RIC with a larger battery. Extended battery life for patients who need more than 24 hours between charges. Less common but available for specific patient needs.
Audéo L-312 — Replaceable battery RIC. For patients who prefer a non-rechargeable device or who do not have reliable charging access. Runs on standard 312 zinc-air batteries.
All models are IP68 rated for water and dust resistance.
Technology Levels — L90, L70, L50, L30
The Audéo Lumity is available in four technology levels:
L90 — The premium tier. Full SmartSpeech Technology at maximum strength. The most refined AutoSense OS 5.0 processing, the strongest noise reduction, and the greatest number of fine-tuning channels for individualized fitting. For patients who want the best the Lumity platform can deliver.
L70 — The advanced tier. Enhanced SmartSpeech performance for improved speech understanding in noise. For patients with moderate to significant listening challenges at an accessible price point below the L90.
L50 — The standard tier. Core SmartSpeech processing and AutoSense OS 5.0 for reliable automatic performance in everyday listening environments.
L30 — The essential tier. Foundational AutoSense OS 5.0 automatic processing for patients whose listening demands are primarily in quieter or less demanding conditions.
Lumity vs. Infinio Ultra R — An Honest Comparison
Patients evaluating whether the Lumity or the Infinio Ultra R is the right choice deserve a direct comparison:
The Infinio Ultra R runs AutoSense OS AI 7.0 — trained on 18 times more real-world data, adapting 24% more precisely than AutoSense OS 5.0. Its battery life is 31 hours versus the Lumity's 24 hours. Its Bluetooth is version 5.3 versus 4.2, with longer streaming range and Auracast support. As the current platform, it is also the one that will receive Phonak's ongoing firmware development going forward.
The Lumity is less expensive — significantly so in most fitting scenarios — and brings four years of real-world validation that a platform launched more recently cannot yet match. For patients whose budget is constrained, whose listening challenges are moderate, or who need the telecoil capability of the L-RT model, the Lumity is the right clinical choice rather than simply the affordable compromise.
The honest summary: the Infinio Ultra R is the better device on every technical specification. The Lumity is the right device for the right patient — and for patients who need a telecoil in a Phonak RIC, it is currently the only option.
Is the Audéo Lumity Right for You?
The Lumity is most suited for patients who want proven, field-validated Phonak processing at a more accessible price point than the current Infinio family. Patients whose hearing challenges are moderate and who do not require cutting-edge AI speech separation. First-time hearing aid users who want a well-established platform with extensive real-world performance data. Patients who need a telecoil in a rechargeable Phonak RIC — the L-RT is the only current Phonak RIC that provides one.
The Lumity is not the right choice for patients whose primary challenge is severe difficulty understanding speech in very noisy environments — the Infinio Ultra R and Sphere devices offer stronger noise processing. Patients who want Auracast broadcast audio capability. Patients who want the longest possible battery life between charges. Patients who are being fitted for the first time and have no budget constraints — for those patients, the Infinio Ultra R is the forward-compatible platform choice.
